Where swimwear belongs
On an inhabited island you swim at the bikini beach and cover up everywhere else. It sounds like a restriction and works in practice as a simple piece of signposting.
When guesthouse tourism began on the local islands, it created a question that resorts never had to answer: where do visitors in swimwear go, on an island where people live, work and pray? The answer islands arrived at was to designate a stretch of beach for exactly that.
It is a practical arrangement rather than a moral one. Residents keep a village where their children swim in shorts and t-shirts; visitors get somewhere to sunbathe without feeling watched. Both sides know where the line runs, which is the entire point.

What to ask before you book
How far is it?
On a small island, a few minutes. On a longer one it can be a twenty-minute walk in full sun, twice a day.
Is there shade?
Some bikini beaches are a bare sand strip. Palms, a shelter or a beach café change how usable the middle of the day is.
Can you swim off it?
Not every designated beach has deep water or reef access. Some are shallow at low tide to the point of being unswimmable.

What exactly is a bikini beach?
A section of shoreline that the island council has designated for visitors, where swimwear is acceptable. It exists so that guests and residents both know where the line is, without anyone having to have an awkward conversation.
Does every local island have one?
Every island geared towards guesthouse tourism does — it is effectively a precondition for hosting visitors. Islands without guesthouses generally do not, and would not expect visitors in swimwear anywhere.
What can I wear on it?
Ordinary swimwear, including bikinis. That is the entire point of the designation. Topless and nude are not acceptable anywhere in the Maldives outside private resort property.
What do I wear to walk there?
Something over the top. A t-shirt and shorts, or a cover-up. The beach is designated; the street to it is not.
Are they any good?
It varies enormously and it is worth asking before you book. Some are long and open to the lagoon; others are a short strip hemmed in by a jetty and a breakwater. The size of a bikini beach says more about a week on an island than almost any other detail.
