Malé is the capital, and one of the most densely populated cities anywhere — roughly two hundred thousand people on a few square kilometres of reclaimed coral. It is not a beach destination and makes no attempt to be one.

For a traveller it is a junction rather than a stop. Ferries to the local islands leave from here, the airport sits across the water on its own island, and almost every itinerary passes through at least twice. Half a day is enough to see the fish market, the Friday Mosque and the seawall.

If your flight times leave you stranded overnight, Hulhumalé across the bridge is the more comfortable place to sleep.

When to go

Malé works whenever your flights do. The city is busiest and hottest in the middle of the day; the waterfront in the late afternoon is when it is most worth walking.
