Dharavandhoo

Dharavandhoo is the way into Hanifaru Bay. The bay sits within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and in season the currents there concentrate plankton in quantities that draw manta rays and whale sharks together — an aggregation seen at this scale in very few places.

Access is regulated and that is the point: snorkellers only, no diving, limited numbers at a time, rangers on the water. It is not a place you turn up to on a whim, and the restrictions are why it still works.

The island itself has fewer than a thousand residents and a domestic airport, which is unusual for a place this size. That airport is the practical argument for Dharavandhoo over the atolls further south: a short flight instead of most of a day at sea.

Hanifaru Bay has a season rather than year-round access, tied to the southwest monsoon and the plankton it brings — broadly the middle of the year. Outside it the bay is quiet and the trip is not worth building a stay around. Confirm the current season with your guesthouse before booking flights.
