Maafushi sits about 26 km south of Malé in Kaafu Atoll, and it is where local-island tourism in the Maldives first took hold at scale. The 2022 census counted 4,471 people living here — a working island with a harbour, a school and a police post, not a resort with a village attached.

That matters for what a stay actually looks like. Guesthouses line the eastern side, dive shops and excursion desks sit along the main street, and the day is organised around boat departures rather than a buffet schedule. Prices sit in a range that makes a week realistic rather than a splurge.

The trade-off is that you are a guest in someone's town. Swimwear belongs on the designated bikini beach, alcohol is not sold on the island, and the pace changes noticeably during Ramadan. None of that is a restriction so much as the reason the island is worth visiting in the first place.

When to go

The northeast monsoon, broadly the drier half of the year, brings calmer seas and better visibility — and the highest prices and fullest guesthouses. The southwest monsoon is wetter, but rain here tends to arrive in short heavy bursts rather than settling in for days, and both rooms and excursions cost noticeably less.
