Dhangethi

Dhangethi sits on the eastern rim of South Ari with a little over nine hundred residents. It is one of the older guesthouse islands in the atoll and sits within reach of the same whale shark grounds that Dhigurah is known for.

The island keeps a quieter profile than its neighbours to the south. There are dive centres, but the density is lower and the main street is short.

For a trip built around what is under the water, without the traffic of the better-known islands, Dhangethi is the compromise.

When to go

Whale sharks are recorded off South Ari through the year, which removes the seasonal gamble. Visibility is generally better in the drier northeast monsoon; the wetter months bring the plankton the sharks feed on.
