Fuvahmulah
Fuvahmulah is a single island that is also an entire atoll — no lagoon, no ring of reef, just land dropping straight into deep water. In a country made of atolls that makes it the exception, and the exception is the reason to come.
With deep water close to shore, the animals that live in it come close too. Fuvahmulah has built a reputation for tiger sharks seen year-round rather than in a season, and dive operators here work almost exclusively with that.
Just over nine thousand people live on the island, which makes it a proper town with its own airport, freshwater lakes and a wetland in the interior. It is not a beach holiday and does not pretend to be — the trip is about what is in the water.
