Two hundred and fifty-eight people live on Thinadhoo. That makes it the smallest island covered here by a wide margin, and it is the entire reason to come.

It sits in Vaavu, the least populated atoll in the country, beside the channels that give the atoll its reputation among divers — strong currents and the sharks that patrol them.

There is no version of this island that involves choice. A guesthouse or two, one or two places to eat, and a reef. People who come here have decided that is enough, and for them it is.

The crossing from Malé is long, so calmer seas in the northeast monsoon make a real difference. Channel diving depends on current rather than season and is judged on the day.
