Hulhumalé

Hulhumalé is not a holiday island and does not pretend to be. It is reclaimed land next to the airport, built to take the overflow from Malé, and its census population of roughly sixty-six thousand across both phases makes it one of the most populous places in the country.

What it is, is useful. A late arrival, an early departure, or a night between a domestic flight and a ferry are all easier here than anywhere else — the airport is a short causeway drive away rather than a boat ride, and hotels sit at every price point. There is a long artificial beach on the eastern side that is genuinely pleasant at the end of a travel day.

Treat it as the hinge of a trip rather than a destination. One night at the start, one at the end, and the actual holiday somewhere with fewer people on it.

When to go

Being a transit stop, Hulhumalé works whenever your flights do. The eastern beach is more appealing in the calmer, drier northeast monsoon months, but nobody plans a trip around that.
