Fulidhoo

Four hundred people live on Fulidhoo. That number explains most of what the island is: a few sand streets, a handful of guesthouses, one or two places to eat, and a quiet that is genuinely uncommon.

The island's best-known feature costs nothing. Stingrays come in to the shallows by the jetty, close enough to stand among, and nurse sharks patrol the same water after dark. It happens most evenings and requires no boat, no guide and no booking — which on an island this small is rather the point.

Fulidhoo is not the choice for someone who wants options. There is no nightlife, the excursion menu is short, and if the weather turns there is little to do indoors. It is the choice for someone who wants a village, a reef and very little else, and is clear that this is what they are choosing.

The calmer northeast monsoon months make the crossing from Malé more comfortable — a consideration on a small island reached by a long public ferry route. The wetter half of the year is quieter still, if that is what you are after.
