Mathiveri

Mathiveri sits at the northern end of Alif Alif with fewer than nine hundred residents — small enough to walk end to end, large enough to have more than one place to eat.

Its best-known feature is offshore: a sandbank a short boat ride away that appears and shifts with the tide. Guesthouses run trips there most days, and for many guests it is the reason they chose this island over a busier one.

Like the rest of North Ari, Mathiveri is reached by boat rather than by plane. That keeps the day-trip crowds away and means arrival takes planning.

The drier northeast monsoon months bring calmer water for the crossing and better visibility on the reef. The wetter half is quieter and cheaper, with rain that tends to arrive in bursts rather than settling in.
