Hanimaadhoo

Hanimaadhoo is the gateway to the far north. It has the regional airport, around two and a half thousand residents, and roughly 300 km of ocean between it and Malé — far enough that the domestic flight is not a convenience but the only realistic way in.

The island itself is functional rather than picturesque: an airport, a harbour, a working community. Most visitors pass through on the way somewhere else in Haa Dhaalu.

For anyone who does stay, the appeal of the north is straightforward — reefs that see a fraction of the traffic of the central atolls.

The north is drier and windier during the northeast monsoon, which brings the better visibility. The wetter half of the year sees fewer visitors still, in a region that already has few.
